Viktimologie bezeichnet die Lehre vom Opfer und der Opferwerdung. Unter Viktimisierung versteht man die direkte und indirekte physische und psychische Schädigung, die ein Opfer durch eine (Straf-)tat erleidet. Nicht nur der (Straf-)Täter selbst (primäre V.), sondern auch Reaktionen des Umfeldes (sekundäre V.) können dabei das Opfer schädigen, also Viktimisieren.

Victimology means the study of victims and what makes people become victims. By victimisation we understand both direct and indirect physical and psychological abuse which a victim suffers through a crime. As well as by the offender himself (primary), the victim can be harmed, and thus victimised, by reactions of the environment (secondary).
